Symptoms
If you notice one or more of these symptoms, this page is for you:
- The stove won't light when you turn the knob
- Auto-ignition sparks but the burner does not light
- Gas smell before the burner lights (knob turned, no flame)
- Only one burner fails to light, the rest work
- The whole stove suddenly stops igniting
The most common causes
Blocked burner ports (most common)
Grease and food buildup block the gas ports in the burner. The fix: a deep clean. This accounts for around 60% of cases.
Faulty auto-ignition
The ignition sensor or its electrical circuit has failed.
Faulty safety sensor (thermocouple)
The sensor shuts off gas automatically if it detects no flame. If faulty, it shuts off gas even while the burner is lit.
Low gas pressure
A weak regulator, a nearly-empty cylinder, or low natural-gas pressure.
Blocked or kinked gas hose
The hose between the cylinder and the stove is kinked or blocked.
Faulty burner knob
The knob turns without actually opening the gas.
Solutions
Safe DIY solutions you can try
Clean the burner
- 1 Turn off the stove and disconnect the cylinder
- 2 Remove the burner (cap + head)
- 3 Soak it in warm soapy water
- 4 Clear the gas ports with a thin needle
- 5 Dry completely and reassemble
Check the cylinder and regulator
- 1 Shake the cylinder — if light, it is nearly empty
- 2 Inspect the regulator for visible rust or damage
Check the hose
- 1 Look for kinks or bends
- 2 If the hose is over 3 years old, replace it
Professional-only fixes (do not attempt yourself)
